St. Vincent de Paul Society have a Winter Appeal every year. This appeal is to help the Society gather resources to help the homeless in our community , especially in the coldest months of the year. There are currently over 105 000 homeless people in Australia.
As St Clare’s College Winter Appeal, year 8 students were invited to participate in a Winter Sleepout on June 16th, in the College grounds. 67 year 8 students, along with Year 11 and 12 College leaders and 6 members of staff participated in the event. The event was a fund raiser for the St. Vincent de Paul’s Winter Appeal and it also allowed to to think about the difficulties of being homeless and to appreciate all that we have.
The participants were asked to bring blankets/sleeping bag and cardboard to sleep on for the night. We were provided with soup, bread and hot chocolate, to help keep us all warm for the evening. Ms. Ribeiro gave us a presentation on the work of St. Vincent de Paul and we learnt about the state of homelessness in Australia. After the presentation we all watched a movie together and then set up our beds for the night in the College yard.
I would like to thank the teachers for providing their time to allow this event to go ahead and to the College leaders for their help and participation on the night. The event allowed us to have some understanding of the difficulties of having to sleep outside and it also raised $539 for the St. Vincent de Paul’s Winter Appeal.
Well done all involved.
