UNSW Sunsprint Challenge Day 1

We had a record number of teams participate in this year’s UNSW Sunsprint Challenge with six St Clare’s College cars featuring prominently throughout today’s racing. The weather was perfect for solar car racing with clear sunny skies enabling the teams to fine tune their cars throughout the morning’s time trials.

The afternoon presented a few challenges with light cloud moving and strong winds playing havoc with the set up of the cars. The rule most teams use to select their gearing is’ ‘low light low gear, high light high gear’ so consistency in light is essential to ensuring cars perform at their optimum on the track. The fluctuating light towards the end of today’s racing resulted in cars not making it around the track.

After today’s racing the cars are seeded for the knockout racing tomorrow. A number of our cars performed well throughout today so we are hopeful of a strong performance tomorrow.

Today was a fabulous learning opportunity for the new students to the Challenge. Being able to get immediate feedback from the selection of gears means they will be well prepared for tomorrow’s racing. Hopefully one of our teams will earn and invitation to the National Competition taking place in Hobart later this year.
