Opening Mass 2020
On Thursday 6th February, the St Clare’s community gathered to celebrate the beginning of the academic year with our Opening Mass. The theme for the Mass and the school year, as chosen by our student leadership team is ‘Strength in Unity’. Mass was led by Fr Bernie Thomas OFM, who explained to us the meaning of the readings chosen for the Mass. The readings reflected upon the benefits of working together and the importance of the expression of love thy neighbour.
At the Opening Mass, the community welcomed all new Year 7 students, all students new to the school and all new staff members. It was a special occasion for everyone as they officially became a part of the Franciscan and Clarion family. Each new member to the community received a special gift from the school reminding them of the wonderful history and heritage that they have become a part of.
Special thanks to our Music staff, Ms Verity Cash and Ms Vanessa Hurley for leading us in wonderful singing throughout the Mass as well as Miss Courtney McNally for her tireless efforts in organising the logistics for the Mass.
This year we are also celebrating 200 years of Catholic Education in Australia as part of Sydney Catholic Schools. We are always mindful of the wonderful contribution of the Poor Clare Sisters to our history at St Clare’s and to the greater Waverley area. Today there are 1750 Catholic schools across Australia, educating around 765,000 students each year. This equates to the equivalent of 1 in 5 Australian students being educated in Catholic Education.
Catholic Schools prepare every student to meet the challenges of their future by developing their mind but also their body and their soul and their spirit.
